While they don’t support Deobra Redden’s behaviour, the family of the guy who was caught on camera assaulting a Las Vegas judge has come forward to say that their mental health was not taken into consideration before the court appearance. The foster mother of Redden, Karen Springer, said to local CBS, “Oh My god, I went into a state of shock.”I mean, seeing him was heartbreaking, and like I said, it’s ultimately about his mental state.” On January 3, Redden, 30, appeared in court to receive a sentencing on an attempted battery conviction from the previous year.

Redden informed Judge Mary Kay Holthus of Clark County District Court during that hearing that he didn’t believe he should go to prison since he was mentally “in a better place.” During the court, Redden’s attorney, Caesar Almase, disclosed that Redden had been given a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. After a series of violent crimes, he had twice been in mental health court. Upon hearing from Holthus that Redden will once more be imprisoned, Redden leapt over the defence table, dove over the judge’s bench, and landed on top of Holthus. A US flag was seen toppling forward and Holthus falling back against the wall behind her bench in the video.

Despite minor wounds, Holthus returned to work the following day. Redden appeared in court again on Monday, where he was given a sentence that could result in up to four years in state prison while being intensively observed and shackled by jail security personnel. “I want to be clear that I am not going to change or modify the sentence that I was about to impose last week before the defendant’s actions interrupted me,” stated Holthus. Redden may be eligible for parole in 19 months, despite the four-year term. Regarding the fifteen additional felony and misdemeanour counts on the courtroom attack, Redden is scheduled to appear before a different judge on Tuesday. Should he be found guilty, he might spend decades behind bars.
