Derek Draper Scandal

Derek William Draper was an English lobbyist. As a political advisor, he was involved in two scandals: “Lobbygate” in 1998 and another in 2009 while Draper was the LabourList website’s editor. He was a psychologist as well as the author of Blair’s 100 Days and Life Support. In March 2020, during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, Draper developed a severe case of acute COVID-19. After a year in the hospital, he came out in December 2023 with serious issues. On January 5, 2024, his wife Kate Garraway announced his death following a cardiac arrest in December 2023.

The Derek Draper scandal is widely shared online. The New Labour spin doctor gained notoriety in the 1990s, but his most notable contribution came from his involvement in the “lobbygate” scandal. Once a Blairite researcher, Mr. Draper co-founded the New Labour group Progress with Liam Byrne (now an MP). In 1996, he was named a director of the lobbying company GPC Market Access. While working at GPC, Mr Draper was captured on camera boasting to an undercover journalist about his connections to the government. The quote “There are 17 people who count in this government and to say I am intimate with all of them is the understatement of the century” is attributed to Tony Blair.

Mr. Draper insisted he had done nothing illegal in the purported “cash for access” episode known as “lobbygate,” even though he acknowledged having a “big mouth.” Following the incident, the well-known champagne-drinking New Labour supporter appeared to have given up on loftier political ambitions, and he moved to the US to undergo psychotherapy training. A brazen backroom kid turned lobbyist, Derek Draper passed away at the age of 56 as a result of COVID-19’s long-term effects during the New Labour administrations of Gordon Brown and Tony Blair. After earning his psychology licence, he married popular Good Morning Britain anchor Kate Garraway, resigning from “the unbalanced, stressed-out, empty existence” he had been leading in Westminster.
