Powerball jackpot winning ticket sold in Michigan: Numbers, drawing

What a way to ring in 2024!

A lucky Powerball ticketholder in Michigan won the estimated $842 million jackpot during a historic drawing on Monday night.

The winning numbers were 12, 21, 42, 44, 49 with a red Powerball of 1.

It is the first time that a ticketholder hit the jackpot on New Year’s Day since the game’s inception in 1992, according to the lottery’s website.

The winning ticket was sold at a Food Castle grocery store in Grand Blanc, Mich, located 60 miles north of Detroit.

The newest member of the millionaire’s club can choose between the $842 million grand prize, paid out in 30 intervals over 29 years, or a one-time payout worth $425.2 million.

“What an incredible beginning to the New Year for Powerball!” said Drew Svitko, Powerball Product Group Chair and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director, in a statement.

Two tickets sold in Florida and Texas won $2 million after they matched all five white numbers and used the lottery’s Power Play feature.

Another four individual tickets sold in California, Connecticut, Florida, and Maryland matched all five white numbers for a $1 million prize.

The lottery’s next drawing on Jan. 3 reverts to the minimum grand prize of $20 million.

The odds of winning Powerball’s grand prize is an astronomical 1 in 292,201,338.

The drawing marks the first time the Powerball jackpot was won in 2024 — and the first since Oct. 11 when a California ticketholder won the second-largest prize in the game’s history.

That ticketholder won a $1.76 billion prize at Midway Market & Liquors in Frazier Park, Calif., a convenience store located 75 miles north of Los Angeles.

The winner’s identity remains anonymous, but is believed to be a local who visits the store “religiously” to play the lottery, a store employee claimed.

Edwin Castro has been living a life of luxury after scoring the $2.07 billion prize — then settling for the one-time lump-sum payment of $997.6 million.

He’s focused on building his real estate portfolio, purchasing three mansions in California totaling $76 million as well as luxurious vacations.

After winning, the 31-year-old Los Angeles resident “vanished” from social media and took some friends on vacation to Fiji for a few weeks
